Torneos Upgrades Playout for UHD and IP Future with Imagine Versio

Argentine sports broadcaster Torneos has updated its multichannel playout system, preserving current workflows while enabling a smooth transition to UHD and SMPTE ST 2110 IP production.

Torneos, an Argentine sports communications firm, has upgraded its multichannel playout system using Imagine Communications’ Versio platform. This move allows Torneos to maintain its existing automation workflows while laying the groundwork for future adoption of UHD (Ultra High Definition) and SMPTE ST 2110 IP-based production.

Torneos, which manages 10 live on-air channels and holds extensive sports broadcasting rights across South America, sought a resilient solution that wouldn’t necessitate a complete overhaul of its current SDI infrastructure. The Imagine Versio integrated playout platform was chosen after evaluation and testing, providing a software-based foundation for its broadcast operations.

The deployment includes dual-channel Versio systems supporting 12 main and 12 redundant backup channels. Each channel integrates playout, branding, master control switching, loudness control, SCTE insertion, and audio processing with SDI I/O. An upgrade to Torneos’s existing ADC automation layer adds playlist redundancy, giving operators a unified interface for live switching, file-based playout, and branding, complete with graphics preview and quick source switching across all 12 control positions. This approach aims to streamline workflows and provide a consistent operator experience from content creation to broadcast.

The upgrade is significant for production teams because it demonstrates a practical path to modernizing broadcast infrastructure without immediate, disruptive changes. SMPTE ST 2110 is a suite of standards that defines how video, audio, and ancillary data can be transported as separate, synchronized streams over an IP network, offering greater flexibility and scalability than traditional SDI. By adopting a system that supports ST 2110, Torneos is positioning itself to leverage these IP-based workflows and UHD capabilities when ready, while preserving the efficiency of its current operations. Imagine’s Versio platform is designed to support hybrid environments, allowing broadcasters to transition to IP at their own pace.
